Participation Camp 2009

Wow! What a full and exciting weekend Matt Cooperrider and crew provided at NYU’s ITP last weekend. You can get all the details here: http://mudball.net/pcamp09/, but the reality is that they really pushed the limit on integrating an offline conference with online participation.

They started with skype chats prior to the event, had a room that was dedicated to virtual presentations and interaction during the event, and are still following it up with even more skype interaction!

While the crowd was intimate (I’m guessing about 70 at its height), it was also international and drew around 2000 unique virtual visitors on Saturday and over 2500 on Sunday – very impressive for a first run event with not much time to plan!

It is my understanding that much of the technical credit goes to http://radical-inclusion.com/ who are just cutting their teeth in this market and trying to make sense of a new model of business interaction and sustainability in this era of social media and information. Best of luck to you in figuring it out! You’re certainly blazing trails!!

Finally, one wonderful outcome was generated by a session led by Lucas Cioffi of AthenaBridge (formerly DeepDebate) and Josh Chernila of AmericaSpeaks. The goal was to determine a plausible means of integrating online and offline dialogue in a way that would allow millions of people to be part of the same conversation. The results of this discussion are posted in a Google group called MillionVoices that aims to continue the conversation. Feel free to join in if you’re interested.
